Testing the Waters: First Date Ideas
by Jacqueline Garner

Of all the dates a couple will go on, the first will probably be the most difficult to plan. It's hard to know what activity will be the most engaging for a person you hardly even know. But first dates really don't have to be so painstaking. The best thing to do is the easiest. Keep it simple.

The safest bet is to keep it as platonic as possible. Save the romance for later. This will make it easier on both of you if the two of you don't hit it off. Try going for coffee, lunch or a drink after work. Dates like these have an implied time limit and are a lot easier to end. They're also pretty easy on the wallet and you won't have to worry so much about what to wear since you'll probably be coming straight from the office.

If the casual atmosphere of a coffee house or a dimly lit bar works like Austin Power's mojo and the two of you come out of this giggling like high school kids, then it's time to plan your second date. This is where you can add a little romance. But not too much! Go slow. You want them to keep coming back for more, don't you?

Here are some casual date ideas :

During the racing season, go to the Del Mar Track! It's always exciting to watch the horses run!

In the summer, go to the Del Mar Fair. Eat lots of junk food, ride lots of rides, and play lots of amusement games. Try to win a big stuffed animal. Even if you don't succeed, the effort will be recognized!

Rent a limo with another couple or just for the two of you, and take a ride to Temecula for wine tasting!

Del Mar hot air balloon rides - include a picnic, and don't forget a camera!

Rent bikes and ride around Coronado Island! Pack a lunch and stop at the beach, or stop and eat on the patio at Peohe's. Great food, great view!

Spend a day at Balboa Park. Go to the Museum of Art, walk the grounds and catch a movie at the the Rueben H. Fleet Imax Theater.

Go on a picnic.
